Project trial steps
Prepration
The Sensor nodes were designed specifically for this function with minimum and simple node components to save cost and power consumption. They are then covered with protective material to make sure the nodes are capable of working under harsh environmental conditions.
Sensor testing
A private farm in Amman was selected as the first location to deploy the system. The system was placed there for three days to collect normal data. The purpose of this deployment was to study the sensor readings and determine the proper threshold values. The temperature values in this location varied between 27-41 degrees Celsius, and the relative humidity values varied between 19-68.5%.
Field planning
This location was chosen to represent a typical environment where a forest fire might occur, and the data collected from this location was used to set the threshold values for the temperature, relative humidity and CBI for the system.
Field trial
A forest in Ajluon was selected as the second location to deploy the system. The system was placed in an area of around 200m2, and the nodes were spread randomly with distances between 2-15 meters apart. The temperature values in this location were around 24.84 degrees Celsius, and the relative humidity values were around 29.5%. A fire was ignited manually in two isolated locations, so the fire could be kept under control, as the forest is highly combustible. The purpose of this deployment was to test the system's ability to detect and predict fires in a forest environment, and to evaluate the system’s performance under real-world conditions.
System final evaluation
The trial was also held in Ajloun, in a different forest with an area of 200m2. The nodes were spread randomly with distances between 2-15 meters apart. The temperature values in this location were around 25 degrees Celsius, and the relative humidity values were around 28%. The test setting in this location was prepared to provide a propagated burning and was designed by a fire specialist from the firefighter training department. This was to test the system's ability to detect and predict fires in a forest environment and to evaluate the system’s performance under real-world conditions with a propagated burning scenario. This deployment was an opportunity to study the system's performance in terms of its three main functions.
